A great wave floating in the air.
That´s the idea of the coverage that floats up on the top of the MAR - Museu de Arte do Rio (Museum of Art of the City of Rio de Janeiro).
It opened on march 2013 and revitalized two antique buildings that were pratically abandoned in the Mauá Square, in the portuary area of Rio de Janeiro.

MAR is part of a revitalization plan to that area, called Porto Maravilha.
Inspired in  other transformed portuary areas such as Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Southstreet Seaport in Manhattan, New York, the Porto Maravilha area will have also another museum, an aquarium, a library and many hotels and restaurants.
The museum complex, a project of the arquitectonic office Bernardes + Jacobsen, is composed by two buildings.

The Dom João VI Palace was built in 1916 to be the aduana and is where the exhibitions are located.
The other building was a hospital and a bus terminal. One of the first modernist buildings in Rio de Janeiro, finished in 1940, now is named as Escola do Olhar (something like the Vision School), where teachers and students can take art courses.

Both buildings have been renewed and now are united by a square and the "wave" coverage on the ceiling.

         The Coverage:

The purpose of the "wave" - a great engeneering work -  is to stectically unite the different arquitectonic styles of the buildings, giving an harmonic view to the museum complex.

An artisan from the carioca Carnival, specialist in the Samba Schools alegories, was called to help in this audacious project.
It was first modeled in styrofoam and then transported in small pieces, as a puzzle, and paved in the top of the buildings all at once, in a work that lasted 13 ininterrupted hours and counted with 90 professionals.
From the ceiling, protected by that coverage, the visitors of the museum can have an impressing view from spots such as the Guanabara Bay and Niteroi Bridge before starting visit ing the exhibitions.

         Education through the art:

The MAR museum has the purpose of expanding Rio de Janeiro´s history. In fact, the museum counts with an increasing colection  of paintings, sculptures, objects and films related to the city. But it's ambition is beyond that. The project proposes education through the contact with art. It involves the continuing education of teachers, educational visits for students and accords with public schools. The Escola do Olhar has partnerships with universities, non-governamental institutions and museums, to create research spaces and workshops.

The MAR museum came to bring life to Rio de Janeiro´s financial area. In a place where before were two abandoned buildings, now it´s possible to see students, tourists and workers, visiting the museum or having a coffe at it´s restaurant on the top.
